Ten Fair Trade groups in HONG KONG

HONG KONG 12 May 2007

Ten Fair Trade groups in Hong Kong presented FAIR TRADE FAIR the first time that Hong Kong has marked the annual World Fair Trade Day. The event attracted more than 1,000 customers of all ages, raised the profile of over 30 outlets that offer Fair Trade products, educated the public on how Fair Trade benefits farmers and workers in developing countries, as well as consumers in Hong Kong.

The 10 groups encourage the corporate and government sectors to practice Fair Trade in their purchasing and trading, and BUY THE RIGHT THING Fair Trade products was the slogan found on everything from postcards to t-shirts made of Fair Trade cotton

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

These 10 organising groups sold special Fair Trade items:

Crossroads International, Fair Partners, Hong Kong Fair Trade Power, FAIRTASTE, Fair-and-Healthy/FMIR, Oxfam Hong Kong, St. Johns Cathedral Bookstore, Simply Organic, Xtreme Green, and Yandy Mays Culture/Fair Trade Shop .

Parents and children baked cookies at Fair Trade Kitchen with the chef Chow Chung, from the TV Show Beautiful Cooking; St. Johns Cathedral set up a Fair Trade caffe on their grounds; FAIRTASTE ran a coffee and tea appreciation event; Fair Partners played games with children; Xtreme Green designed t-shirts made from Fair Trade cotton; Beanie Magazine displayed children's drawings; Yuen Che-hung was a hit storyteller; Catriona Finlayson a fun face painter; and Fair-and-Healthy, FMIR offered a new Fair Trade childrens book called Zapizapu Crosses the Sea dedicated to a boy named Matthew Santiago, who turned two today.
