Why Kids Need Fair Trade: Case Study

1. Sana Hastakala, Nepal - Boibha and Babita's story

Boibha Raj Bhardari is 8 years old, she attends Nightingale school, a bus ride away from her home. Boibha's mother, Babita Rajbhandari was trained as a tailor by Sana Hastakala, a Fair Trade organisation. After spending two years working with Sana Hastakala Babita and her husband opened their own tailoring shop. Sadly a year later Boibha's father passed away and Babita was unable to maintain their fledging business on her own. Sana Hastakala welcomed her back. For the last four years Babita has been able to single handedly provide for Boibha and herself thanks to the Fair Trade wages she receives and the support she has received from one of Sana Hastakala's Fair Trade buyers who is sponsoring Boibha's education and bus fee to school.

Boibha says that she loves her mother very much and is very proud of her. Although 8 year old Boibha is still too young to understand the concept of Fair Trade she is quick to point out that it is thanks to her mother's Fair Trade job that she can attend a good school and not want for anything. Boibha's dreams of one day becoming a doctor.
