Why Kids Need Fair Trade: Case Study

2. Get Paper, Nepal - Sanjay and Subash's story

Sanjay, 12 years old and Subash, 11 years old are brothers. They live with their deaf father who following the departure of his wife has been raising Sanjay and Subash on his own. Their father works for the Fair Trade organisation Get Paper as a professional sample maker. With the support of Get Paper and the fair wages he receives for his skillful work he is able to look after his two sons and send them to school. Were there not organisations such as Get Paper providing work opportunities for people with disabilities such as Sanjay and Subash's father, Sanjay and Subash would be confronted with a very different life. Get Paper produces traditional Nepalese hand made paper crafts in an environmentally sustainable manner to provide employment opportunities to women mostly and people such as Sanjay and Subash's father, who would otherwise be discriminated against.

The school that Sanjay and Subash attend is sponsored by Get Paper. Get Paper has a sister NGO General Welfare Prathistan GWP, towards which 40% of Get Paper's profits are directed. GPW allocates these funds to a number of projects such as supporting the education of young girls, AIDS awareness program, and many more.
