Message for World Fair Trade Day 2007

The situation of most children in most of the least developed countries including Nepal are very miserable!. They are deprived of the basic needs of life, like food, clothing ,shelter, health care and education. The root cause of all this is poverty. Fair Trade works for poverty reduction. Fair Trade can provide basic needs to children by providing fair work , Fair return and other opportunities  to their parents, producers and artisans.

We really need to promote  Fair trade and educate more and more people on the importance of fair trade. Celebrating World Fair Trade Day with different activities helps in this direction. This year's slogan “Kids need  Fair Trade!” is very timely and appropriate. We inform and educate our kids and children about the concept and importance of Fair Trade for improving the lives of people. They are the future of the nation. They can be the leaders and ambassadors of the Fair Trade
Movement.

In Nepal, because of the political and economic crisis it has been facing for the last 10 years, the condition of children has become more vulnerable. Fair trade organizations in Nepal should focus their activities in bringing improvement in their lives.

Sana Hastakala was established in 1989 with the financial and technical support of UNICEF with the objective to support women artisans by providing marketing and other business development services , so that they can take care of their children properly with their income. With this year's Fair Trade Day slogan, we will work further in bringing change and improvements to the lives of Nepalese Children. We will be
organizing different kids related programs like essay competition on Fair Trade among school children distribution of stationary with this year's Fair trade day logo to children of Hopeful home for orphans and helpless children, post card competition etc.

Fair Trade is growing , so is the positive impact on improving the lives of millions of people. In the mean time the challenges faced by Fair Trade are also growing. Some people even are misusing this concept for their personal benefit. We need to be very alert with such persons while celebrating 6th World Fair Trade day. Lastly , on the occasion of 6th World Fair Trade Day I would like to request all concerned to be more dedicated towards promoting and expanding Fair Trade and its cause.
