ANNUAL MEETING AND WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY REPORT

PEKERTI FOUNDATION, INDONESIA

Annual meeting:

As with years before, Pekerti again held it’s annual producers meeting to coincide with World Fair Trade Day. The annual meeting has objectives to improve harmonious relationships between Pekerti and producer partners. This year the annual meeting held in 09 – 10 May 2007 in Dwima Hotel, Bogor, West Java, was attended by Pekerti board Director, all board management, office staff and representatives from 12 producer groups from several regions. The theme of meeting was to “Building commitment together to achieve success through Fair Trade”.

The meeting held for 2 days, consisted of the annual member meeting of KOPERTI (Koperasi Kerajinan Rakyat Indonesia) Pekert’s cooperative, Pekerti’s Annual Report as well as discussion for evaluating the cooperation commitment between Pekerti and producers signed by both parties 2006 meeting. The discussion evaluated the obstacles and solutions in implementing the commitment agreed.

One sad note to the meeting was the recognition by all, with testimonials give for producer Mr Enjang Sudrajat, a wooden handicraft producer from West Java who passed away on March 2007 Mr. Enjang Sudrajat was a long time producer partner for Pekerti have been in the network for  14 years.

The final session of the meeting, Pekerti announced the top three producers for quantity. Reward prizes were given in an effort to try and stimulate producers to improve their product quality, quantity and professionalism to Pekerti. Once the two day of formalities where finish and evening of games and door prize were played to lighten the mood of meeting participants.  

World Fair Trade Day:

In order to celebrate the World Fair Trade Day, Pekerti held two programs, firstly, Fair Trade socialization for students in 05 May 2007. The theme of this program is““Ceria Bersama fair Trade (cheerful with fair trade) and was run for students, teachers, and parents from Trisula Elementary School.

This program content of introducing the Far Trade principals through the way that student easy to understand and followed by drawing competition with environment theme and also a bazaar for the Fair Trade products. Environmental issues, especially how deforestation can cause flooding really struck home to students as many had been badly affect by the Jakarta flooding just a few months before. To end the fun day all students we give free Pekerti vouches to spend at a Fair Trade handicraft bazaar that was opened to the public.

The second activity for celebrating World Fair Trade Day, Pekerti held a tree planting ceremony on 11 May 2007 after the annual meeting. This activity was held at “Kampung Pekerti’, land newly purchased by a group of Pekerti’s staff”. The 12,822 m2 of land has been chosen to become a pilot tree plantation project for the supply of raw material used for craft. The trees are albasia, mahogany, pulai, mangium, salam, coconut, durian, jati, sapodilla, jackfruit, and cassava.
