Using locally abundant materials

APIKRI Cooperative

The Indonesian craft organization APKRI was established in 1990 to improve the socio-economic conditions of poor families in the rural and urban areas of central Java through the development of handicraft skills and associations. Although Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world, APIKRI, a non-profit marketing organization, works with artisan groups representing many different faiths. APIKRI (the Foundation for the Development of Indonesian People's Handicrafts) promotes traditional handcrafts produced by 230 artisan groups, representing 2,000 Indonesian artisans.

By utilising locally and abundantly available resources these artisans are reducing their impact on their environment. Sourcing locally involves less use of transport and so lower carbon emissions. Choosing to work with locally abundant materials means that there will be no need for expensive and polluting inputs to grow introduced plants. Any stress on the local environment is lessened. Also, the artisans work with natural materials and are therefore not exposed to dangerous chemicals.

These products incorporate recycled materials. These are used to take advantage of available and accessible materials. Recycling addresses not only local waste issues but also lessens further carbon emissions by reducing the need to produce more. These products are hand made. Choosing hand production over mechanised production significantly reduces CO2 emissions. It also provides asset poor people living in remote areas with local income earning opportunities.
