Uganda Crafts 2000 Ltd

Uganda Crafts was formed in 1983 by Marilyn Dodge, a UNICEF worker and Betty Kinene, a recently redundant shopkeeper. Their primary aim is to support disabled and widowed women and their families through income generating schemes such as crop growing initiatives and handicraft training and production. Uganda Crafts was privatized in 2000. Central to their decision was the idea that they could use a business model to sustain and empower themselves as opposed to relying on donations that had been subsidising their costs. Uganda Crafts 2000 Ltd still operates with the same outlook and mission as when it was an NGO.

These baskets are entirely made from banana stems.

By utilising locally and abundantly available resources these artisans are reducing their impact on their environment.
Sourcing locally involves less use of transport and so lower carbon emissions. Choosing to work with locally abundant materials means that there will be no need for expensive and polluting inputs to grow introduced plants. Any stress on the local environment is lessened. Also, the artisans work with natural materials and are therefore not exposed to dangerous chemicals.

The baskets are hand produced. Choosing hand production over mechanised production significantly reduces CO2 emissions. It also provides asset poor people living in remote areas with local income earning opportunities.
