Using locally abundant materials

Development Trading Limited (DTL) was established in 2001, as part of a DFID funded Training for Enterprise and Exports (TEEM) project. This project was managed by Traidcraft Exchange in United Kingdom, a Fair trade company with which DTL still maintains a trading relationship. DTL was established with a core objective of promoting sustainable growth of local and export trade in products, from small producers, who normally face problems in accessing reliable markets. The company aims to facilitate local and international trade on fair trade principles and to contribute towards poverty alleviation through trade.

This product is made from recycled materials and locally abundant plants.

By utilising locally and abundantly available resources these artisans are reducing their impact on their environment.
Sourcing locally involves less use of transport and so lower carbon emissions. Choosing to work with locally abundant materials means that there will be no need for expensive and polluting inputs to grow introduced plants. Any stress on the local environment is lessened. Also, the artisans work with natural materials and are therefore not exposed to dangerous chemicals.
The Palm leaf is harvested from the palm tree using environmentally friendly practices. The plant is not compromised in the process.
No chemicals are used in the cultivation of the plants or treatment of the leaves. These products are completely natural. These products are produced by hand. Choosing hand production over mechanised production significantly reduces CO2 emissions. It also provides asset poor people living in remote areas with local income earning opportunities.
