World Fair Trade Day 2006 "Fair Trade Now!" > GO |
Product Design and EcologySolly Levy, Fair Trade Product Design and Development Consultant, AMWA, Knysna, South Africa www.amwa.co.za "The linkage and connectivity between Fair and Ethical Trading and the Environment is a strong and obvious one. Respect for human beings and their living conditions is directly linked to the responsible use and preservation of our natural ‘resources’. Therefore all designing and production must be directed with this in mind. In fact the ‘cradle-to-grave’ approach for products should be equally considered along with traditional issues like price and seasonal colours etc. Other key issues that must be considered when developing or designing new products are: 6Use of recycled materials 7The materials are bio-degradable and or recyclable. 8The raw materials are sustainably harvested. 9The products designed are long lasting. 10Energy required to produce the products. 11The processes and bi-products are kept sustainable, minimal and responsible. So, it can be seen that this set of criteria must be considered by the designer or product developer when looking at new Product Development.”
