World Fair Trade Day 2006 "Fair Trade Now!" > GO |
This is an issue of justice that we need to highlightTrade Aid New Zealand www.tradeaid.co.nz “The world's focus has turned to the environment and the debate about climate change has quite literally taken the world by storm. However the aspect of justice and the unfair role we (as rich consumers) play in climate change is rarely addressed. Ironically, it is quite often those who have the lowest carbon footprint, the poor, who are criticised for the way they manage their own resources. Yet it is also the world's poor who are the biggest losers in terms of their vulnerability to changes in our climate and weather patterns. Our trading partners and producers are part of this group, so as partners in a relationship; this is an issue of justice that we need to highlight. Trade Aid is organising events across New Zealand aimed at making New Zealanders think about the justice issues surrounding our current lifestyles. We aim to promote fair trade as an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional trade and to encourage consumers to look at carbon footprints within production in addition to the current trend of examining travel miles.” |
